Propaganda
Use ChildU lessons 6547 and 6557 to answer the following questions.
1. What is the purpose of propaganda?
2. How is propaganda different from persuasive writing?
3. Define the following terms: basic message, medium, slogan, endorsement.
4. Describe these propaganda techniques: name calling, exaggeration, bandwagon, card stacking, testimonial, repetition, false cause and effect, transfer, plain folks, emotional appeals.
5. Choose two of these activities:
a. A well-known clothing company has hired you to write advertisements for its new line of clothing. The company aims to sell its clothes to teenagers. Design an advertising campain that uses at least three propaganda techniques.
b. Analyze a letter to the editor. Click on this link: Letter to the editor. Answer the following questions: 1. What is the "basic message"? 2. What is the medium? 3. Are any propaganda techniques used? If so, list the technique used and write down the specific example.
c. Collect the political advertisements that come in the mail or clip them out of the newspaper. Circle and label any propaganda techniques that are used.
d. Analyze an Advertisement: print worksheet in the lesson and complete it.
